Deities
Although most denizens of Estel Úqua prefer to go it their own without the surveillance of a god to whom they may owe some tribute, the deities of the realms bring hope and relief to those who follow their tenants. While families and cities may build shrines or temples to their gods, it's Clerics, Paladins, and even the occasional Ofsiellingian Monk through which the gods appear to work, answering their prayers and guiding their quests to some unknown purpose. With the exception of Ofsiellingian Monks, no religion is followed outside of it's originating culture.
Dwarven Religions
If a Dwarf follows any religion it will be either Maton Shamanism or the Balmnese faith.
-
Maton Shamans believe in Athamwi, the Light Vulture, who brings light in darkness and guides the dead to their final resting place. Followers of Maton Shamans are popular in the mines for their ability to produce light and in many places for their ability to speed the rebirth of a soul lost to battle or cave-ins. There are legends that masters of Maton Shamanism can turn their skin to stone, blind people with a blast of light, or even fly.
-
Followers of the Balmnese faith worship Dudnabing, The Loud Goddess. Depicted as a Dwarven warrior carrying a horn, Dudnabing is popular for prayers in times of war. Feats attributed to her Clerics include the ability to give warriors increased endurance so they can continue to fight long after they should have died, and fully restore the life of those on the very cusp of death. It's rumored that Paladins of Dudnabing are stronger and faster than any other Dwarf when engaged in battle, be that a back alley brawl or a war.
Elven Religions
Elves love religion, although few would consider themselves a devout follower of the Shifract faith, Charmouthian Sect, or the non-theistic Ofsiellingianism. Those that do are treated with a respect typically reserved only for the most skilled of Sorcerer and enjoy many perks such as free housing in the best of neighborhoods within the Elven Empires.
-
Clerics and Paladins of the Shifract faith worship Chiptonter, the Reaper Tree. It is said Clerics can give and take life and Shifractian Paladins swards are somehow sharper than any other mortal blade. Both Paladins and Clerics also boast that they can talk with trees, receiving guidance and even strength in times of need, although if that's true no one can say.
-
Charmouthian Sect is a strict faith that follows Godasbuton, the Amber Father. His clerics display an uncanny wisdom and are prized counselors by Kings across the realms. Their Paladins are fierce warriors and it is said that they can freeze their enemy like an insect caught in a drop of amber. There are whispers that both Clerics and Paladins of the Charmouthian Sect can see into the minds of men, but this is widely believed to be a myth, although a terrifying one.
-
While Ofsiellingianism came from Elves and is mostly followed by Elves, it is the one belief in the whole realms that welcomes followers regardless of their Race. Followers of Ofsiellingianism dedicate their lives to it's tenants, which holds Nature in high regard, and aims to do no harm to those who bring no harm. These Monks are not easy prey, though, as their feats of prowess are renown and it is said that true followers can rejuvenate themselves by meditation - not only healing themselves but extending their lives past that of any mortal of any Race.
Human Religions
Humans are not fond of religion, and few follow anything but their own moral code. Those who do are either of the Kindoke Faith or, more rarely, a follower of the ancient Rokere ways.
-
The Kindoke Faith, though not frequently followed, is consider the main religion of the Humans. The religion is named after Kindoke, the blue spring of all life, who it's followers believe brought forth all life in Estel Úqua. Clerics are said to be able to give life, even to the dead and it's rumored that the rare Kindoke Paladin cannot be killed, although many Sorcerers and Historians doubt the truth of that tale.
-
Rockere is an animistic faith, with no deities to call on. The few humans who still follow this ancient belief are frequently Druids or Rangers and are said to have an uncommonly good hand with animals.
Orc Religions
Orcs like religion in the same way they like supper or a good brawl. It's just something you do. Some, though follow the religions or Olberere, the Olborere sect of Kromford, or the dark Pentarestrian Cult more devoutly. Even non-orcs fear their gods and no faith is as reviled as Pentarestrianism.
-
Olborere, the main religion of Knacuria, worships the Fire Ape Framton. For Paladins of Olborere it is said the god gives a strength that cannot be matched, and a battle rage that brings down armies. Clerics seem more than adept at giving Framton's strength and rage to any they choose. It is said a tribe with a Cleric of Framton at their back could take down an Elvin Empire, although that has never been proven true.
-
The Sect of Kromford worship aspects of Framton that most Orcs would mock, but it is said that Kromford Paladins are quicker on their feet than Elves, and move faster than mortal men, while their Clerics have been seen to bathe the unworthy in a consuming fire.
-
Pentaresterian Cult is feared throughout the realms for their freakish appearance with bone decorations and white face markings, but only Orcs truly know the power of Persaxrid The Lost. His Paladins are known as The Dead and are said to be able to kill a beast with the mere touch of their blade. Clerics of Persaxrid are rumored to be able to kill a healthy man with a prayer or cause a soul to loose it's way back to the rebirth gate.
Tremlin Religions
Tremlins enjoy a connection with nature that is, they would say, deeper than that of even the Elves. Still, there are a few religions the occasional Tremlin follows, namely Witherbu Spirit Shamanism and the Uxrid Faith.
-
Witherbu Spirit Shamanism follows the Grey Lady, who is said to be the connection between the waking world and the spirit or dream world. It is said her Shamans can pass between worlds at will, and are valued as spirit guides among their people.
-
Those of the Uxrid Faith follow Winkingin, the Unknown Hound. Clerics are said to be able to find locate anything they desire, in this world or the next, and it is said that Paladins of Uxrid, when they face a foe in battle, will not die until their foe is defeated. It's rumored that they chase their foe into the spirit world and continue to battle there but that is, after all, just a myth.
Disclaimer:
It should go without saying that these names and religions are entirely fictional, and following a 'religion' in game is entirely a player's choice (and, in fact, should be a relatively uncommon thing among the agnostic population of Estel Úqua). Much thanks to the fantasy name generators out there that helped me develop these names (and college coursework on world religions as well).
